Here are some facts about Memorial Day that you probably didn’t know! + Some fab Memorial Day Weekend styles

Memorial Day is traditionally a time for celebrating those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Of course, Memorial Day means different things to different people. Still, whether you think of it as the official beginning of summer, the start of picnic and BBQ season, or just some time to kick back with your family and friends, it is essential to remember the true relevance of the holiday. That is to remember those that served in the United States Military!

Have you ever wondered how the long weekend that unofficially starts the summer came to be?

Let us give you the lowdown on this historic day!

1. More than one city claims to be the birthplace of Memorial Day

Although President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, to be the "Birthplace of Memorial Day," referencing a town's celebration in 1866. Many other places are known to have celebrated the holiday earlier, and exactly where the first celebration took place remains in dispute.

2. It was originally called Decoration Day

Because the holiday was originally celebrated by decorating the graves of fallen soldiers, the occasion was given the moniker of Decoration Day. Over time, it was renamed Memorial Day when General Logan codified the holiday. "The 30th of May, 1868, is designated to strew with flowers or otherwise decorate the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land," he said.

3. There's a reason why the occasion is celebrated on the 30th of May

The date was selected because it wasn't the anniversary of any battle in particular—well, according to legend, that is.

4It's customary for the U.S. president or vice president to give a speech to commemorate the occasion

And traditionally, that speech is delivered at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

5. Originally, only soldiers who had died in the Civil War were honored

After WWI, though, the holiday began to encompass members of the American armed forces who had fallen in any conflict.

Now that you're all caught up on the essential facts about the holiday, let's get down to the details you've truly been waiting for! What your look is going to be like!
